The #ContentChat Bulletin: April Fool's Joke Free Edition

Published about 1 month ago • 5 min read

Hi there,

I’m hoping your day is blissfully April Fool’s Joke free. Or that if you receive some pranks in your inbox they are actually funny.

Too often, brand April Fool’s Day pranks are anything but funny.

And don’t get me started on what it’s like to be on the creative end of a mandatory April Fool’s Day piece of joke content.

For every brand that gets it right (or even gets a new product that everyone loves out of it), there are thousands of really bad, not at all funny “jokes” sent out into the world. Don’t be that brand!

Thank you for your consideration! And remember not to believe your eyes and ears today.—generative AI means there’s likely to be a whole lot of shenanigans afoot today.

Coming Up on #ContentChat

Content Chat is my weekly LinkedIn live video chat focused on sharing expertise and ideas amongst the content marketing community. Join the conversation on Mondays at noon Pacific / 3 p.m. Eastern. Be sure to mark your calendar to join the #ContentChat community and me for these upcoming guests:

  • TODAY on #ContentChat, we’re joined by Robert Rose, fractional marketing leader, and chief strategy officer of The Content Advisory, to discuss why a fractional content leader is a smart marketing investment. We’ll explore what it takes to start a content marketing strategy from scratch and how an organization’s needs scale down after the initial implementation, helping you understand if a fractional content officer could benefit your team.
  • Next Monday (April 8) on #ContentChat, our guest is Michelle Griffin, a personal brand and PR strategist. She will explore how to develop a powerful thought leadership platform for better branding. We’ll explain what thought leadership is (and isn’t) and the foundational elements you’ll need to build a solid thought leadership platform.

I love case studies. As a journalist, I loved interviewing people and helping them share their stories. So, I naturally take that same approach when crafting engaging customer stories, too. You'd think that everyone would take that approach. But, unfortunately, you'd be wrong. Instead, it appears that even amongst people who say they want to write truly innovative and compelling case studies, there are a few really silly hurdles getting in the way: An SME expects the case study to regurgitate...
