The #ContentChat Bulletin: Are You a Content Entrepreneur?

Published 23 days ago • 7 min read

Hi there!

Last week was a big milestone for me—I finally got to check “Become a published book author” off my list with the launch of The Content Entrepreneur. This CEX community-authored book is one of the first books from the new Tilt imprint from the self-publishing company Lulu.com. It consists of chapters written by 30+ content pros covering everything a content entrepreneur needs to know to grow their business.

In a few weeks, I’ll be in Cleveland for this year’s CEX conference. There, I’ll celebrate the book launch with my co-authors and talk with and learn from content entrepreneurs from around the globe. I attended the event for the first time last year and came away with so much inspiration and helpful resources that I put to use over the past year in my own work.

If you’ve read Joe Pulizzi’s book Content, Inc., the idea of being a content entrepreneur is a familiar one. But if you haven’t, here’s how he defines it via The Tilt website: “A content entrepreneur is someone who creates content to grow an audience, and eventually makes money from that content they develop. Content entrepreneurs are building a content business, not using content as a marketing tool, side gig or hobby.”

What’s interesting to me, is how Joe has again given me a concise way to explain what I am doing career-wise, as he did when he coined the phrase “content marketing” over a decade ago.

Not all content marketers are content entrepreneurs…yet! But, whether you are working for someone else or running your own business, the book still offers a lot you can take away. It just may even give you that necessary spark to embark on a content entrepreneurial journey of your own.

I contributed three chapters to the book:

  • Picking the Right Social Platform
  • How to Use AI for Content Repurposing (read the excerpt on our blog)
  • Building Your Brand Voice: A Five-Step Approach

You can order the book directly from Joe’s website, and all proceeds go to The Orange Effect Foundation, a nonprofit that brings speech therapy and technology support to children with speech disorders.

Being part of this project has inspired me to dust off a book outline I drafted a few months ago and start the research process for my own book.

Stay tuned for more updates—and some requests for input from you—as I progress on that journey.

How to Use AI for Content Repurposing (An Excerpt From The Content Entrepreneur).
In every consultancy engagement over the past 7+ years, we’ve championed the idea that for every piece of content you create, you should have at least three use cases. But it doesn’t always feel like content marketers have the time to invest in reaching this ideal state. Luckily, artificial intelligence can do wonders for helping you create derivative content from your significant blog post, video, audio content, or other content assets. Want to learn how to put AI to work in this way for your content? I’m honored to share my advice in Joe Pulizzi’s book The Content Entrepreneur. Preview my chapter in this blog post, and order your copy of the full book here.

Internal Agencies Kill Your Content Marketing.

Just a few short days ago, I was in Napa, California, sipping wine and enjoying the sunshine with our dogs. We had an amazing time. But it was also a lot of work! I spent a really long time researching hotels, restaurants, and wineries that were both dog-friendly and had gluten-free options. Talk about making things hard on myself! But, in this case, it was worth it. We had a lovely time and didn't have to board the dogs (who love doggie playtime but prefer to spend all their time with their...

Hi there, I’m hoping your day is blissfully April Fool’s Joke free. Or that if you receive some pranks in your inbox they are actually funny. Too often, brand April Fool’s Day pranks are anything but funny. And don’t get me started on what it’s like to be on the creative end of a mandatory April Fool’s Day piece of joke content. For every brand that gets it right (or even gets a new product that everyone loves out of it), there are thousands of really bad, not at all funny “jokes” sent out...

I love case studies. As a journalist, I loved interviewing people and helping them share their stories. So, I naturally take that same approach when crafting engaging customer stories, too. You'd think that everyone would take that approach. But, unfortunately, you'd be wrong. Instead, it appears that even amongst people who say they want to write truly innovative and compelling case studies, there are a few really silly hurdles getting in the way: An SME expects the case study to regurgitate...
